Magical Holidays

As a self-proclaimed prankster, I love leprechauns and limericks, but my family did not celebrate St. Patty’s Day when I was a child. It’s as much fun to create a new tradition as it is to uphold an old one, so that’s what I set out to do.

The week of March 17, I took the kids to a dollar store to pick out some green décor and then set them loose to decorate the house. We made roll out shamrock cookies for after dinner treats along with green tea (and maybe a green beer for the daddy). You might also read aloud some limericks and try composing some of your own.

I think the best part of the day was the trick. When the kids weren’t looking, the “chaun” (short for leprechaun) would take something of theirs and hide it. One year, Kitty the stuffed animal was found in a tree. The naughty chaun would leave powdered footprints behind, signaling the crime and leaving clues to the resolution. The whole family would go on the hunt until the item was discovered. Sometimes, the simplest things are the most memorable and fun!
